This year's NFL draft offered an unexpected, and most edifying, moment of social consciousness when the raucous audience made up of pro football fans from around the country, broke into a chant of "She said NO, she said NO" when the Pittsburgh Steelers' "time on the clock" was announced from the podium. The chant referred to the controversy surrounding Pittsburgh quarterback, Ben Rothlesberger, who has been the central figure in a number of sexual assault allegations. The credibility and serial nature of these accusations caused the NFL to recently announce a six game suspension for Rothlesberger for the 2010 season.

I send major props to all my feminist sisters who have been highlighting sexual violence and organizing "take back the night" campaigns on college campuses across the country for decades. I am convinced that it is those efforts along with many more off-campus campaigns against sexual and relationship violence that resulted in that chant echoing through the halls of Radio Music City Hall and the NFL draft.
Social change sometimes creeps up on you and I take this incident as one more indicator that things are finally beginning to change.
Don't get me wrong, there is still an epidemic of sexual violence on campus and throughout our society. But when you hear this kind of impromptu protest at an unlikely venue like a pro-football draft, you know something is going on in the culture. And to that I say one big, loud "Amen"!
