Blog - Amplify your voice

Exciting news, ya’ll.  MTV3 made a movie about Pedro Zamora.  Do you remember Pedro?  If not, I hope you at least heard of him.  Pedro was a cast member on MTV’s “Real World San Francisco” (that was during the crazy season with Puck waaay back in 1994).  Not only was Pedro one of the first Latinos on the Real World, but he was the first (and I believe only…correct me if I’m wrong) openly gay, HIV positive man on the show.

Pedro was fierce.  He did not hide his disease.  He did not hide his sexuality.  In fact, Pedro and his partner were married on air.  Pedro gave a voice to so many underrepresented communities at a time when so many were silenced.

Sadly, I believe that if Pedro were to be a cast member on the Real World Brooklyn today, it would still be a shock for many.  What is it that they say?...“the more things change the more they stay the same.”  We’re still fighting to teach comprehensive sex ed in schools (something Pedro never had, thus was ignorant about the risks of unprotected sex).  There is still a ton of stigma in the Latino community around HIV/AIDS.  And do I even need to discuss what happened with Prop 8?

Either way, while I haven’t seen the movie, I’m glad to hear it was made.  My one early critique, however, is that it’s being shown on MTV3.  I mean, I don’t have MTV3.  It’s not a part of basic cable and this is a story that everyone should hear.  I don’t know about you all, but I’m willing to give up a few hours of “The Hills” and “The City” to see this. Until then, who is hosting a viewing party and can I come?

Pedro will air on MTV3, April 1st at 8pm EST.

Update! I just found out it will be on all MTV channels on the first =)

I was too young to be watching MTV that season, but I'm glad that they've made a movie about him now. Hopefully it will bring some knowledge to today's audience!
