As blogger m_chandler let us know, the Pittsburg Board of Education voted a few weeks ago to have a comprehensive sex education policy in schools. This is a huge accomplishment for Pittsburg (and all the youth activists who took a stand!) but the rest of Pennsylvania is largely still lagging behind. The state gets a big fat F on its sex ed report card due to the harmful abstinence-only funding coming into the state and an incomplete policy: Pennsylvania has no teaching standards for sex education.

The ACLU of Pennsylvania, Planned Parenthood of PA and Pennsylvanians for Responsible Sexuality Education (PARSE) are hosting a lobby day to introduce two new bills and to educate legislators on the importance of providing Pennsylvania's youth with honest sex education:
- The Healthy Youth Act would require all schools that teach HIV/AIDS education to also teach age-appropriate, scientifically accurate sexuality education. This would include contraceptive methods as a means to lowering the risk of STI transmission and unintended pregnancy. The bill also includes an opt-out provision for parents who don't want their youth to receive this instruction.
- The Notice Home Act would require all schools that include abstinence-only lesson plans in their curriculum to notify parents about the materials so that they are better aware of what information their child is and is not receiving.
On Tuesday, March 31st, join PARSE in Harrisburg at the State Capitol rotunda for a rally in support of honest sex education and have the opportunity to speak directly with legislators in support of this essential legislation! Best of all, there is free bus transportation from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh on the morning of March 31st (lobby day training will be provided on the bus or upon arrival.)
