One step forward on emergency contraception access...
Israel-based Teva, the world's biggest generic drug company, and Hungarian drug maker Richter Gedeon GDRB.BU said on Monday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave final approval to their Plan B One-Step "morning after" emergency contraception.
"This is one tablet that women can take to help prevent unintended pregnancies after unprotected sex. The old version was two pills taken 12 hours apart," Moshe Manor, Teva vice president of global branded products, told Reuters.
... but we still have a ways to go.
While women 17 and older will be able to buy this pill over the counter without a prescription, women 16 and younger still have to get a doctor's prescription. And when it comes to emergency contraception, time (and money) is of the essence. The fact of the matter is that many young woman will not be able to see a doctor in time to get a prescription, and this means that they will have a pregnancy that likely could have been avoided.
While we've had a slight amount of progress, we need to break though this final restriction and make Plan B available to more young women without a prescription.
