What can we learn from the cancellation of the prom at Constance McMillen’s Mississippi high school?
Constance rules!
This is why Congress has to pass the Student Non-Discrimination Act
Hope isn’t lost -- look how many folks stepped up to hold a non-discriminatory prom!
All of the above

Today on Capitol Hill Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) will formally introduce a bill that will finally authorize federal funding for comprehensive sex education.

Whereas today states can only receive funding for abstinence-only-until-marriage initiatives (that have be shown in independent studies to be a $1.5 billion failure), the Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act would allow these states to receive funding to provide age-appropriate, medically accurate, science-based sex education whose real purpose is to prevent unintended teen pregnancy and transmission of STI’s, not enforce social conservative ideology and misinformation.

Despite intentional misinformation by the abstinence-only crowd, this will not “do away with teaching abstinence.” Real comprehensive sex education stresses the benefits from abstinence among teens, but realizes that necessary information about contraception should not be censored from the classroom. With teen birth rates and STI transmission on the rise, we can no longer stick our heads in the sand with abstinence-only programs.

As our own Advocates for Youth President, James Wagoner says:

“The REAL Act is a necessary first step if we are serious about providing young people the important education and information they need to make responsible decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.”
From Sen. Frank Lautenberg:
“Growing up isn't easy and our young people find themselves in tough situations every day. They need all the information to make smart choices, and ‘abstinence-only’ programs simply aren’t working. It's time for our nation’s young people to get the education they need to take on the real life situations facing them every day”
From Rep. Barbara Lee:
“It’s time for us to get REAL about sex education. We should absolutely be teaching young people about abstinence, but we shouldn't be holding back information that can save lives and prevent unwanted pregnancies. Instead of ‘abstinence only,’ what we're proposing is ‘abstinence-plus.”
Lautenberg and Lee will be joined by representatives from the Advocates for Youth, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SEICUS), for the bill’s introduction at noon today.

Was this bill introduced in the House and the Senate, or just the senate? Also, what is the bill number?

I hope that this passes this year, it would be a great step forward for sex education in our country.

wow..I find it completely ironic how you can just initially state that the reason teen pregnancy is on the rise is due to the lack of 'the effect' that Abstinenc until marriage has had on youth and teens..

I teach AUM here in Kansas City..I and others are on the front lines (in the urban core) where the predominance of pregnancies are occuring.  What we teach works.

Also, i have been recently going over Siecus' report of the inaccuracies that you claim we teach using Choosing the best products.

You should really check your sources before you put out..lies.

Truth is..planned parenthood and others like you have had more funding than we could ever have had....even during the bush administration.

Seems to me that the shoe could be on the other foot?????

the bottom line is...teens given the confidence to make healthy choices can choose abstinence or they can choose your way...given the whole Truth.

Let's see how well you and organizations like you perform going forward. I doubt that the so-called significant changes you are looking for will appear.  Lies and deceit never do.

We pledge with our very last breath to fight organizations like yours, planned parenthood, siecus and others with Truth.  We are raising up a generation who will be able to recognize Truth, make great choices and remain abstinent until marriage.

We know that comprehensive sex ed includes a comprehensive look at what is really going on and allowing people (teens) to see the good and the bad.

We would love to debate with you...youth, teens, and adults who believe and KNOW that the AUM message is ringing loud and clear. Of course we know you won't.

Our voices will be AMPLIFIED!!!

Min. A
