In the wake of the anti-gay ballot measures passed in California, Arizona and Florida on November 4th, many have been wondering why the Democratic Party didn’t put more of an effort behind defeating those measures.

Well, this video of outgoing DNC Chairman Howard Dean’s press conference following the election might give you a bit of a hint.

Q: This question is for both chairmen: Could you please explain why the ballot votes went so far conservative while the office holder votes went to the Democrats?

DEAN: I don’t think I understood the question?

Q: A lot of the ballot initiatives in the states… the very conservative position won, whereas….

DEAN: I can’t comment on that, because I just haven’t seen the… I hardly even know the results of most of the ballot initiatives, so I just can’t make an intelligent response to that, sorry.

Considering the fact that Howard Dean has been a vocal proponent of gay rights in the past, specifically passing civil unions while Governor of Vermont, this response is rather disappointing.

But again, considering the strength of the effort to defeat measures like Prop 8 from the national democratic establishment, not very surprising…

(fyi, if you can find any statements from the DNC since then on ballot measures like Prop 8, send them our way, because we sure can’t find any…)
