**Editor's note: Amplify has received additional information about condom availability on NKU’s campus. Condoms are available at the university’s health center. Students are permitted to distribute condoms at some campus events, but not at others.**
As we first mentioned here last month, Northern Kentucky University student Dennis Chaney was arrested at the school's student orientation day for handing out free condoms. Distributing these condoms apparently violated their student orientation guidelines that prohibited handouts if they “included alcohol/drug/sexual innuendo”. Ridiculous...
In this video from RH Reality Check, Chaney tells us his story:
I would have gotten into so much more trouble if I had actually been handing them out to my peers.
Ernesto
I was there and this group was asked to follow the rules like every other organization there. I'm one of the most liberal people you'll ever meet and I am so for reproductive justice and having access to contraceptives. However, there was an agreement made and this organization broke that agreement.
Instead of passing out condoms, this organization could have passed out information on where to access condoms or let them know that they normally pass out condoms at events, but that they weren't able to at that time because of an agreement.
Firstly, the incoming freshman weren't students at that point because they hadn't yet registered for classes. Until the second day of the program when they do register, they aren't students. Secondly, this guy made an ass out of himself so that his organization could have attention. I don't care how passionate he is about his organization and what their message is, you don't act disrespectful to people in authority who have invited you to their event especially when there are specific guidelines that are agreed upon by both parties prior to the event.
Obviously, Dennis Chaney doesn't know how to properly lead an organization and get his message across in a respectful way. What he did gives liberals a bad name.
I had people coming up to me saying that Dennis was trying to push the condoms onto women saying things to them such as, "Here, you might need this one later..." implying that every female there that night was going to engage in sexual activity. Many of the young women were very offended by Chaney's use of language and how pushy he was about handing out condoms instead of allowing students to come and get them.
If you want to get your message across, learn a thing or two about people skills. If you go around offending your target audience, your organization will fall on its face.
I have no pity for Chaney being arrested, especially since the arrest happened because he was being belligerent, not because he was passing out condoms. He was being very disrespectful to Amy Wylie and Holly Caudill and most of the people there were in agreement that we were glad his organization wasn't at any more orientations.
Chaney seems to have twisted his story around to gain sympathy for his cause...perhaps he should focus more on the message of his organization rather than going for total shock value to gain attention.
In defense of civil rights, or reproductive rights, authority can never be allowed to threaten people with arrest or a club for defying some "agreement" or unjust law. If students fold up and go home when threatend with arrest or a taser exercising our 1st Amendment rights, our kids won't be as free as we are today. I was exercising passive resistance by staying behind the table after the condoms and my signs were seized. Although my issue was not a racial issue, It was still an issue that affects any student group that wishes to exercise their right to distribute condoms at freshman orientation in the future. I'm sorry if my actions came off as stubborn or "dickheadish"
I'm sorry if I offended any female or male for suggesting they may need a condom later, AS IN THE FUTURE. That would be like totally advocating safe sex!
