Are you aware that the government is essentially trying to attack the progression of women’s sexual health? Well if you’re not aware, I am here to bring you information that it is sure to either affect you or someone you know. Currently there is a bill that has been introduced (HR1) and passed by the House, but rejected by the Senate, which is set to attack family planning services and resources across our nation.

What are the intentions of the HR1 bill?

1. To zero out all Title X funding for family planning. Specifically for South Carolina, 250,000 women across the state are in need of family planning assistance; only approximately 100,000 women even receive the services they need with the current Title X funding provided. With the Title X funding being zeroed out, the women of South Carolina would be greatly and negatively impacted.

2. To defund United Nations funding for family planning services in approximately 150 countries.

3. To enforce the “Global Gag Rule” with international countries which would prohibit those countries who receive family planning funding from the U.S., from discussing or providing abortion services.

4. To not provide any federal funding to Planned Parenthood Health Systems, which currently provide family planning services in the areas with the greatest need, at over 800 family planning clinics nationwide.

In addition to this bill, there are other bills (HR3 and HR358) which are also being discussed, and if implemented, would prevent private insurance companies from covering abortion services in their initial insurance plans, or by placing stricter limitations on abortion services. Ok, so maybe you are asking yourself the question, “Well how does this really affect me as a South Carolinian?” It’s simple, South Carolina’s state legislation is also enforcing either the same or similar bills that are being introduced at the federal level. An added negative with South Carolina’s piece of legislation however, is that a health care provider can refuse family planning services, including abortion and contraception, for moral reasons.

With many women living in low-income and underserved areas already having to choose between purchasing/obtaining contraception or paying their monthly bills, we can already see that removing funding for family planning services on a federal level will only continue to attack women’s health. The attack on women’s health and the loss of funding could lead to Medicaid funding being cut for newborns, which could lead to an increase risk of infant mortality, and could also lead to a large population of less healthy women.

It is everyone’s responsibility to know that the “War on Women” from our federal and state level government is real. We cannot sit back and allow the government to destroy the progression of women’s health in this country and other countries alike. We must take a stand, contact our legislators and let them know the support of funding cuts on family planning services is NOT ok!

We have to be the voice to share with our powers at be that we are Pro-Children, Pro-Family, and Pro-Women! Take a stand, contact your legislator today. To learn more about what you can do to fight back visit www.tellthemsc.org/site/PageServer?pagename=takeaction (State Level) and http://capwiz.com/rcrc/home/ (Federal Level).
