Advocates For Youth
campaignTulsa

The Tulsa Youth Empowerment Alliance brings together young people ages 16-24 to increase access to and knowledge about contraception, including birth control and condoms.

The Campaign

Advocates for Youth and the Oklahoma Health Equities Initiative have joined together to launch a city-wide campaign to make sure that teens have the information, skills, and services they need to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy and STDs, including HIV.

The campaign has launched the Youth Empowerment Alliance comprised of 11 young people from Tulsa who are:
  • Educating their peers about healthy relationships, sexual decision making, and how and where to access contraception in their community.
  • Promoting a text messaging line which serves as a resource for young people in Tulsa to find information about sexual health, including STD prevention and birth control and local clinics where they can get help.
  • Creating and disseminating their own educational materials through events such as Pizza Protection Parties.
  • Working with local businesses and community-based organizations to ensure that adults take an active role in preventing unwanted teen pregnancy and STIs.

Jin Jin

My name is Jin Jin Paine. I am 16 years old and I go to Booker T. Washington HS. I like to swim, hang out with my friends, go to movies, normal teenage stuff. I wanted to be a YEA leader because I believe STD and Sexual Awareness are both important issues that teenagers my age should be able to comfortably talk about, without being embarrassed.

Olivia

My name is Olivia Nicole Herman. I am 17 years old, turning 18 in October. I go to East Central High School, and I am also a cheerleader there. I wanted to be in Tulsa YEA, so i could help people get the facts and protection to be able to have safe sex and make better decisions.

Sydney

Hello, my name is Sydney. I am 16 and I am junior at Booker T Washington High School. My hobbies include running track, hanging with friend, and having a good time. I want to be a Yea member because it allows me to teach teens around my age how to take precaution when it comes to sex and how to stay safe. It also feels good to know that I am teaching what I have learned to help someone else.

Mark

My name is Mark Carter, I'm 17 years old and I go to East Central High School. My hobbies are fishing, wrestling and playing video games. I wanted to be a YEA leader because I wanted to learn how to speak in front of a lot of people and I wanted to learn about safe sex and teach others.

Tyrhonda

My name is Tyrhonda, I am 17 years old. I attend East Central High School and I am a senior. I enjoy writing poems and reading books. I wanted to become a YEA leader because it gave me an opportunity to do something different and learn more about the subject no one wants to talk about. It gives me a chance to be open and learn new things with others who are just as curious as I am.
