I think young people can contribute to the safe sexual and reproductive health by becoming more open-minded and receptive to information about these issues and building their confidence. I believe that no matter how knowledgeable a person is about their sexual health, if they lack the self-efficacy to put their newfound knowledge into practice, then the STD infection rates of teenagers and young adults will continue to rise.
As a public health student, I have studied community organizing in regards to improving the overall health of the community. Joining the Young Women of Color Leadership Council is a great amalgamation of the advocacy and public health issues, while contributing to the HIV prevention campaigns for African American women. I hope to meet and speak with young men and women of color about their sexual health and that my influence will change their risky and negative attitudes about sex, sexual health and STD's.
I hope that I can provide young adults with the tools to change their own behavior.
