I decided to become an activist when I felt that more measures against the spread of HIV could be taken, and that I personally could have an impact. Instead of standing by the sidelines I felt that I should be more proactive, especially when HIV affects African American women at such alarming rates. Not only is it within my capabilities, but it gives me a purpose.
I hope to make more information accessible to young women of color. By opening new avenues of communication with young women of color more prevention can occur, be it teen pregnancy or HIV. My primary focus is using more creative preventive techniques to lower the occurrences that are obvious from published data.
Young people need to know that we have a voice and that it is within our capabilities to write to legislators to show that we care and are involved in the issues. Not only should we go to the legislators but we should also volunteer at local organizations, and show our commitment and motivation. When young people are involved, and for a good cause, people listen.
