Amplify Report Card: North Dakota 


North Dakota has among the lowest teen pregnancy, AIDS, and STIs in the nation. Sexually active high school students in North Dakota are more likely to use condoms than youth in most states.

+Because of concern over recent changes in Chlamydia reporting and relative low incidence of syphilis, we used the state's gonorrhea rate as a stand-in for sexually transmitted infection rates.


While many states have recognized the damaging effects of Title V Funding and rejected it, North Dakota continues to accept the funding ($89,000 in Fiscal Year 07).


CBAE funding is awarded to state and local organizations by the federal government, bypassing any state approval process. No organizations in North Dakota receive CBAE funding.


North Dakota has no law requiring sex education in schools or regulating its content if taught – it has not taken the necessary action to guarantee accurate, comprehensive sex ed for its students.


GLBTQ students in North Dakota are at serious risk for harassment and discrimination.

North Dakota does not require sex education in public schools, even though 43 percent of its high school students report ever having had sex.

Although North Dakota has a comparatively low AIDS rate, racial disparities persist: African Americans account for 17 percent of AIDS cases in the state, even though they make up less than one percent of the population; and American Indians/Alaska Natives account for ten percent of AIDS cases even though they make up only five percent of the population.
