Did You Know?

  • Among youth ages 15 to 24, 1.1 percent of women are infected with HIV in comparison to 0.2 percent of men.
  • Sixty-two percent of women in Ethiopia marry before they are 18 – and only sixteen percent of married female teens and 24 percent of married 20- to 24-year-old women used a modern method of contraception.
  • Adolescent pregnancy, combined with limited access to medical care during pregnancy and labor, can result in a painful and even deadly condition called obstetric fistula. In Ethiopia 9000 women are the victims of fistula every year.
  • The lifetime risk of a woman’s dying in childbirth or from obstetrical complications in Ethiopia and other sub-Saharan countries is as high as one in 16, compared to one in 2,800 in developed countries.
  • Experts estimate that contraceptive access could prevent up to 35 percent of all maternal deaths.

The Campaign:

Advocates for Youth and Ethiopia’s Talent Youth Association (TaYa) have partnered to create a youth leadership council. Named ECHO (Ethiopian Youth Council for Higher Opportunities), the council will advocate for the Ethiopian governments to: 1) increase access to modern contraceptives for young women between the ages of 15-29; and 2) secure youth representation in the decision-making process of national policies, program implementation, and evaluation on adolescent reproductive and sexual health.

Advocates’ Partner in Ethiopia: Talent Youth Association

Talent Youth Association (TaYa) was established by ten youths who came from different colleges, universities and institution of higher learning. TaYA is legally registered with the Ministry of Justice to function as a local NGO in Ethiopia. TAYA envisions a country where its young people are healthy, productive and self-reliant. TAYA’s mission is to promote, initiate and advocate for the improvement of adolescent reproductive health conditions and combating the spread of HIV/AIDS through participation, partnership and networking in rural and urban areas of Ethiopia.
